Film Festival Brings the Ultimate Girl Power – Alex Vockroth, Johns Hopkins News
“...As effective as features can be in their 90 minutes of storytelling, the Festival boasts plenty of shorts that accomplish the same in a fraction of the time. One such short is Diggers, written and directed by Cheryl Slean.”

From Actor's Ink Interview – Sean Hackett
Actor's Ink:
What is the most popular question you receive when people see your film?
Cheryl Slean:
It’s probably, ‘How did you get [the actor] Phil Davis?’ I was desperately seeking a Fred with an authentic British accent, and I had seen Phil in Vera Drake, a film by Mike Leigh. Phil gave such a fine performance in that film, so I told our casting director to contact his agent. Phil read the script and said yes the next day. He responded to the material and had a window in his schedule, and he's really keen on shorts as a form. He wrote and directed one himself. So we really lucked out with Phil. Great actor, great guy, and a great golfer. The first time we talked on the phone he was somewhere in England “out on the links.”

“...In this short piece, a lot is revealed about these two, all done sharply and economically. Slean is clearly talented and hopefully she'll be making longer features.”

Northwest Asian Weekly, interview with Diggers actor Marie Matiko by Ann-Marie Stillion
...Matiko said making Diggers with Northwest director Cheryl Slean was a blessing. “As an activist and as an Asian American woman, I sincerely thank and congratulate Cheryl Slean for her thinking outside the box and delivering it with quality. It would be my honor to work with her again.”

“Diggers,” written and directed by Seattle filmmaker Cheryl Slean, features actress Marie Matiko as one of the diggers in a graveyard. Her relationship with a fellow worker as they carry out their work is beautifully limned when they speculate about the person they are about to bury. In this short piece, a lot is revealed about these two, all done sharply and economically. Slean is clearly talented and hopefully she’ll be making longer features.
